Ingredients
Scale
1/2 pint fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
6–8 fresh basil leaves
2 ounces blanco tequila
1 ounce fresh lime juice
1/2 ounce orange liqueur (like Cointreau or Triple Sec)
1/2 ounce simple syrup (adjust to taste)
Kosher salt or sugar for rim (optional)
Ice
Lime wheel and basil sprig for garnish
Instructions
Prepare your glass: If you want a salted or sugared rim, run a lime wedge around the edge of your glass and dip it into a shallow plate of salt or sugar. Fill the glass with ice and set aside.
Muddle the fruit and herb: In a cocktail shaker, gently muddle the sliced strawberries and basil leaves until they release their juices and aroma. Do not over-muddle the basil, as it can become bitter.
Add liquids: Pour the tequila, fresh lime juice, orange liqueur, and simple syrup into the shaker with the muddled ingredients.
Shake: Fill the shaker with ice. Seal it tightly and shake well until the outside of the shaker is very cold, about 15 to 20 seconds.
Strain and serve: Double strain the mixture (using both the shaker’s strainer and a fine-mesh sieve) into your prepared glass over fresh ice. This removes small strawberry and basil pieces.
Garnish: Garnish your refreshing alcoholic summer drink with a fresh lime wheel and a small basil sprig. Serve immediately.
Notes
For a sweeter drink, increase the simple syrup to 3/4 ounce. For a tangier flavor, reduce the simple syrup slightly.
If you are making a batch for a party, muddle the strawberries and basil, then mix with the liquids. Store this mixture in the refrigerator. When ready to serve, shake individual portions with ice before pouring.
Use high-quality tequila for the best flavor in this tequila herb cocktail.
