Make this addictive sweet and salty treat using just five simple ingredients. This recipe for Saltine Cracker Toffee, often called Christmas Crack, requires no candy thermometer and is perfect for beginners, holiday gifting, or parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 sleeve (about 40) saltine crackers
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a large baking sheet with aluminum foil and place the saltine crackers in a single layer across the foil.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the butter and brown sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly until the butter is melted and the mixture comes to a boil. Continue boiling for exactly three minutes, stirring occasionally. Do not overcook.
  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. Pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the saltine crackers on the baking sheet. Spread it quickly to cover the crackers completely.
  5. Bake for 12 to 15 minutes, or until the toffee is bubbly around the edges.
  6. Remove the baking sheet from the oven. Immediately sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Let the chocolate sit for five minutes to soften.
  7. Spread the melted chocolate evenly over the toffee using an offset spatula.
  8. Place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for at least one hour, or until the chocolate is completely firm.
  9. Break the hardened toffee into irregular pieces. Store in an airtight container at room temperature or in the refrigerator.

Notes

  • For a festive variation, sprinkle coarse sea salt or crushed candy canes over the melted chocolate before chilling.
  • If you prefer a richer flavor, you can substitute milk chocolate or dark chocolate chips for the semi-sweet variety.
  • This candy is best eaten within one week for optimal crunch.
