Make this unique, sweet and salty snack mix featuring maple, butter, and pistachio flavors. This is a gourmet twist on classic muddy buddies.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 12 cups Chex cereal (rice or corn)
  • 1 cup white chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup salted butter
  • 1/2 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup shelled, roasted, and salted pistachios, roughly chopped

Instructions

  1. Place the Chex cereal in a very large bowl. Set aside.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine the white chocolate chips, salted butter, and maple syrup. Heat over low heat, stirring constantly until the mixture is completely smooth and melted. Do not let it boil.
  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the vanilla extract and salt.
  4. Pour the warm maple butter mixture evenly over the cereal in the large bowl. Gently fold the cereal until it is fully coated.
  5. Place the powdered sugar in a large zip-top bag. Add the coated cereal mixture to the bag. Seal the bag, leaving some air inside, and shake well until the cereal is evenly coated with powdered sugar.
  6. Pour the coated cereal onto a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spread it into a single layer.
  7. Sprinkle the chopped pistachios evenly over the coated cereal while it is still slightly sticky. Let the puppy chow cool and set completely, about 30 minutes.
  8. Once cool, break apart any large clumps and store in an airtight container.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, use dark chocolate chips instead of white chocolate chips.
  • You can toast the pistachios briefly before chopping them for a more intense flavor.
  • Store this homemade puppy chow recipe in a cool, dry place for up to one week.
