Make the famous North Shore Garlic Butter Shrimp at home. This quick recipe delivers intensely garlicky, buttery shrimp ready in under 30 minutes, perfect for serving over rice.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound jumbo shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 10 cloves garlic, minced finely
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
  • Cooked white rice, for serving

Instructions

  1. Pat the shrimp completely dry using paper towels. This helps them sear better.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter with the olive oil.
  3. Add the minced garlic to the skillet. Cook for about 1 minute until fragrant, being careful not to let the garlic burn. You want it golden, not brown.
  4. Add the paprika, salt, and pepper to the garlic butter mixture. Stir to combine.
  5. Increase the heat to medium-high. Add the dried shrimp to the skillet in a single layer if possible. Do not overcrowd the pan; cook in batches if necessary.
  6. Cook the shrimp for 1 to 2 minutes per side until they turn pink and opaque.
  7. Remove the skillet from the heat. Stir in the fresh lemon juice.
  8. Toss the shrimp gently to coat them thoroughly in the garlicky butter sauce.
  9. Serve the Hawaiian Garlic Shrimp immediately over warm, sticky white rice to soak up the sauce. Garnish with fresh parsley.

Notes

  • For the most authentic flavor, use high-quality butter. Browning the butter slightly before adding the garlic adds depth.
  • Serve this dish with a side of simple macaroni salad, as is common at the food trucks.
  • If you prefer a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes with the paprika.
