Prepare this easy, retro Hanky Panky recipe featuring a savory sausage and cream cheese mixture baked on toasted bread. This is a simple, crowd-pleasing snack perfect for game days or parties.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound bulk pork sausage
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 package (12 ounces) pumpernickel or rye bread slices

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a baking sheet.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the pork sausage, breaking it up as it cooks, until it is fully browned. Drain off any excess grease completely.
  3. Transfer the cooked sausage to a medium mixing bowl.
  4. Add the softened cream cheese, shredded cheddar cheese, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper to the bowl with the sausage.
  5. Mix all ingredients together thoroughly until the mixture is uniform and creamy.
  6. Trim the crusts from the bread slices. Cut each slice of bread in half diagonally to create triangles, or use small crackers if preferred.
  7. Spread a generous layer of the meat and cheese mixture onto each piece of bread or cracker.
  8. Place the prepared bites onto the greased baking sheet.
  9. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the cheese topping is melted, bubbly, and lightly golden brown at the edges.
  10. Serve these cheesy bites warm immediately.

Notes

  • You can substitute ground beef for half of the pork sausage for a different flavor profile.
  • For an extra crisp base, lightly toast the bread slices in the oven for 3 minutes before adding the topping mixture.
  • This recipe works well as a dip if you omit the bread and serve the mixture hot with sturdy crackers or tortilla chips.
