Make the best homemade chocolate milk using cocoa powder. This recipe skips the mixes and lets you control the sweetness for a rich, creamy drink better than store-bought options.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups Milk (whole milk recommended for creaminess)
  • 3 tablespoons Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
  • 2 to 4 tablespoons Granulated Sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • Pinch of Salt

Instructions

  1. Combine the cocoa powder, sugar, and salt in a small bowl or directly in the glass you plan to use.
  2. Add about 2 tablespoons of the milk to the dry ingredients. Stir vigorously with a spoon or small whisk until a smooth, thick paste (syrup base) forms. This step prevents lumps.
  3. Pour in the remaining milk and the vanilla extract.
  4. Stir or whisk until everything is fully combined and the chocolate milk is uniform in color.
  5. Taste the mixture. Add more sugar if you prefer it sweeter, stirring until dissolved.
  6. Serve immediately over ice for a refreshing chocolate drink, or chill before serving.

Notes

  • For a quick chocolate milk fix, you can prepare a batch of chocolate syrup ahead of time using the paste method above, increasing the sugar and cocoa slightly, and storing it in the refrigerator for up to one week.
  • Use your favorite dairy-free alternative milk for a low lactose option.
  • For a kids favorite chocolate milk, use slightly less sugar or substitute with a natural sweetener like maple syrup.
  • To make whipped chocolate milk, froth a small portion of the finished drink using a handheld frother until light and airy before topping the glass.
