Make these easy Honey Garlic Chicken Skewers for a flavorful weeknight dinner or party appetizer. You can cook them in the oven or on the grill for perfectly juicy results.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 lbs boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs, cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)
  • Wooden or metal skewers (soak wooden skewers in water for 30 minutes before use)
  • Optional: Bell peppers and onions, cut into chunks for threading

Instructions

  1. Prepare the marinade: In a medium bowl, whisk together the honey, soy sauce, water, minced garlic, grated ginger, sesame oil, black pepper, and red pepper flakes if you are using them.
  2. Marinate the chicken: Place the cubed chicken into a resealable bag or shallow dish. Pour half of the honey garlic sauce over the chicken, reserving the other half for basting later. Seal and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 4 hours.
  3. Preheat your cooking surface: If grilling, preheat your grill to medium heat (about 350°F). If baking, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with foil or parchment paper.
  4. Assemble the skewers: Thread the marinated chicken pieces onto the soaked wooden or metal skewers. If you are using vegetables, alternate chicken pieces with chunks of bell pepper and onion.
  5. Cook the skewers: If grilling, place the skewers on the preheated grill. Cook for 10 to 15 minutes, turning occasionally, until the chicken is cooked through and lightly charred. If baking, arrange the skewers on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 18 to 22 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  6. Baste and finish: During the last 5 minutes of cooking (for both methods), brush the skewers generously with the reserved honey garlic sauce. Continue cooking until the sauce is sticky and caramelized.
  7. Serve immediately: Remove the chicken skewers from the heat. Let them rest for a few minutes before serving. You can garnish with sesame seeds or chopped green onions if desired.

Notes

  • For extra juicy chicken skewers, use chicken thighs instead of breasts.
  • If you prefer a thicker glaze, simmer the reserved sauce in a small saucepan over medium heat for 5 minutes until it reduces slightly before using it for basting.
  • This recipe works well in an air fryer at 380°F for 12-15 minutes, turning halfway through.
