Make comforting, handheld cheeseburger pockets using ground beef and cheese wrapped in flaky pastry. This recipe is simple for a quick weeknight dinner or a freezer-friendly meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 (8 ounce) package refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and chopped onion until the beef is fully browned and the onion is soft. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Stir the salt, pepper, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and oregano into the beef mixture. Cook for one minute. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool slightly.
  4. Unroll the crescent roll dough onto a clean surface. Separate the dough into 8 triangles. Do not separate the perforations.
  5. Spoon about 2 tablespoons of the cooled beef mixture onto the wider end of each dough triangle. Sprinkle a small amount of cheddar cheese over the beef.
  6. Fold the narrow point of the dough over the filling and roll up toward the wide end to seal, creating a pocket shape. Press the edges firmly together to seal the seams. Crimp the edges with a fork for extra security.
  7. Place the sealed pockets seam-side down on the prepared baking sheet.
  8. Brush the tops of the pockets lightly with the beaten egg wash. This helps them brown nicely.
  9. Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and cooked through.
  10. Let the cheeseburger pockets cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a copycat Hot Pockets recipe feel, use puff pastry instead of crescent rolls for a flakier crust.
  • You can prepare these pockets ahead of time, place them on a baking sheet, cover, and refrigerate for up to 24 hours before baking. Add a few extra minutes to the bake time if baking directly from the refrigerator.
  • These are great for freezer friendly meals; freeze unbaked pockets on a tray, then transfer to a freezer bag. Bake from frozen at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for about 25-30 minutes.
