Ingredients
Scale
2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1 cup sour cream
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
Instructions
Heat the butter and olive oil in a large, heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat.
Add the sliced onions, salt, and pepper to the skillet. Stir to coat.
Reduce the heat to medium-low. Cook the onions slowly, stirring every 5 to 10 minutes, for 45 to 60 minutes until they are deep golden brown and very soft. Do not rush this step; proper caramelization builds the flavor.
Remove the skillet from the heat and let the caramelized onions cool completely, about 20 minutes.
In a medium bowl, combine the cooled onions, sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder.
Mix everything together until it is well combined and creamy.
Cover the dip and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
Serve your creamy onion dip cold with chips or fresh vegetables.
Notes
For an extra savory depth, add 1/4 teaspoon of onion powder along with the garlic powder.
If you prefer a tangier dip, substitute 1/4 cup of the sour cream with plain Greek yogurt.
This dip tastes best when made a day ahead, as the flavors deepen overnight.
