Ingredients
Scale
1 cup warm water (105-115°F)
2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
1 tablespoon granulated sugar
3 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted, plus more for brushing
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning or dried parsley
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, plus more for topping
Instructions
In a large bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let stand for 5 to 10 minutes until foamy.
Add 2 tablespoons of melted butter, salt, and 2 cups of the flour to the yeast mixture. Mix until just combined.
Gradually add the remaining 1 cup of flour until a soft dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5 to 7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, turning to coat. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for 45 minutes, or until doubled in size.
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.
Punch down the risen dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long, thin breadstick shape, about 8 to 10 inches long. Place them on the prepared baking sheet.
Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until lightly golden brown.
While the breadsticks bake, prepare the topping: In a small saucepan, melt the 1/2 cup of softened butter over low heat. Stir in the garlic powder and Italian seasoning. Remove from heat and stir in the 1/2 cup of Parmesan cheese.
As soon as the breadsticks come out of the oven, brush them generously with the garlic parmesan butter mixture.
Sprinkle extra grated Parmesan cheese over the tops immediately. Serve warm, perhaps with a marinara dipping sauce.
Notes
For extra soft breadsticks, cover the baked breadsticks with a clean kitchen towel while they cool slightly after brushing with butter.
If you prefer a quicker rise time, place the dough in an oven that has been turned off after being preheated briefly.
This recipe makes a great dinner side dish for pasta or soup.
