Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • Vegetable oil for frying
  • 2 cups cooked white rice or quinoa (for the bowl base)
  • 1 cup shredded cabbage or coleslaw mix
  • 1/2 cup thinly sliced carrots
  • 2 green onions, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (for garnish)
  • For the Bang Bang Sauce:
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1/4 cup sweet chili sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Sriracha (adjust to your spice preference)
  • 1 tablespoon honey or sugar
  • 1 teaspoon rice vinegar
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Shrimp Coating: In a shallow dish, whisk together the flour, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. In a second shallow dish, place the cornstarch. In a third dish, place the beaten eggs.
  2. Dredge the Shrimp: Pat the shrimp dry. Coat each shrimp first in the flour mixture, then dip in the egg, and finally coat thoroughly in the cornstarch. Shake off any excess.
  3. Fry the Shrimp: Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet to 350°F (175°C). Working in batches, carefully add the shrimp and fry for 2 to 3 minutes per side until golden brown and cooked through. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  4. Make the Bang Bang Sauce: While the shrimp cooks, whisk together the mayonnaise, sweet chili sauce, Sriracha, honey, rice vinegar, and garlic powder in a small bowl until smooth.
  5. Coat the Shrimp: Place the hot, crispy shrimp in a large bowl. Pour about two-thirds of the Bang Bang sauce over the shrimp and gently toss until the shrimp is evenly coated.
  6. Assemble the Bowl: Divide the cooked rice or quinoa among serving bowls. Top with the coated bang bang shrimp. Arrange shredded cabbage, sliced carrots, and sliced green onions around the shrimp.
  7. Garnish and Serve: Drizzle the remaining sauce over the bowl components if desired. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Serve immediately for the best texture.

Notes

  • For air fryer bang bang shrimp, toss the coated shrimp with a light spray of cooking oil and air fry at 400°F (200°C) for 8 to 10 minutes, flipping halfway.
  • To make this a healthier option, substitute baked or air-fried shrimp for deep-fried shrimp.
  • For a quick bowl base, use microwaveable rice packets.
  • Add sliced avocado for healthy fat content.
