Ingredients
Scale
6 large apples (like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
1/4 cup water
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup rolled oats (old-fashioned)
1/2 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 inch baking dish.
In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, water, granulated sugar, lemon juice, and cinnamon. Toss gently to coat the apples evenly.
Pour the apple mixture into the prepared baking dish and spread it into an even layer.
In a separate medium bowl, prepare the topping. Combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, and salt. Mix these dry ingredients together.
Cut the cold butter into the dry ingredients using a pastry blender or your fingertips until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Do not overmix; you want visible clumps of butter.
Sprinkle the oat topping evenly over the apple layer in the baking dish.
Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbly and tender when pierced with a fork.
Remove from the oven and let it cool for at least 15 minutes before serving. Serve warm, often with vanilla ice cream.
Notes
For the best texture, use a mix of tart and sweet apples.
If the topping browns too quickly, loosely cover the dish with aluminum foil for the last 10 minutes of baking.
You can substitute half the butter with coconut oil for a slightly different flavor profile.
