Ingredients
Scale
1 block (14 oz) extra-firm tofu
1 tablespoon olive oil or avocado oil
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
Press the tofu: Wrap the block in several layers of paper towels or a clean kitchen towel. Place it on a plate and put something heavy on top, like a cast-iron skillet or a few cans. Let it press for at least 30 minutes to remove excess water.
Cut the pressed tofu into 1-inch cubes.
In a medium bowl, toss the tofu cubes with the olive oil until lightly coated.
In a separate small bowl, mix the smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper to create your dry rub.
Sprinkle the dry rub mixture over the oiled tofu cubes. Toss gently until every piece is evenly coated with the seasoning mix.
Preheat your air fryer to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius).
Place the seasoned tofu cubes in a single layer inside the air fryer basket. Do not overcrowd the basket; work in batches if necessary for maximum crispy results.
Air fry for 10 minutes.
Open the basket, shake the tofu well to flip the pieces, and continue to air fry for another 5 to 8 minutes, or until the tofu is deeply golden brown and very crispy.
Remove from the air fryer and serve immediately.
Notes
The pressing step is crucial for achieving maximum crispy tofu texture without cornstarch.
Using a higher heat setting (400°F) helps draw out moisture quickly, aiding crispiness.
Do not skip the oil; it helps the dry rub adhere and promotes browning.
